Abstract The report describes a mathematical model for adiabatic operation of a packed-column absorber designed to remove acid gases from coal gasification crude product gas. It also gives results of experiments with a small pilot-scale coal gasification/gas cleaning facility designed to test the model. The model predictions compared well with the actual absorber liquid temperature profile and outlet gas composition. The model is useful for the evaluation of the effect of changes in process variables on absorber column performance and (hence) for column design.
