Abstract The report gives results of an assessment of the potential reuse of liquor from nonregenerable flue gas desulfurization systems by applying available water treatment processes. Although scrubbers normally operate in a closed-loop mode, this study investigated liquor reuse if a scrubber purge became necessary as a result of off-design or other operating conditions. Chemical characterizations were performed on liquors from four different scrubbers; these were assessed for use as power plant service water or for direct discharge. Treatment is required for either use; but, in most cases (for economic reasons), treatment for discharge is not recommended. Chemical precipitation (e.g., lime-soda softening, filtration, and pH control) is adequate for most service water usage cases. The applicabilities of available treatment systems are given, in addition to scrubber flow diagrams, water balance, and treatment costs for a range of liquor flow rates.
