Abstract The objective of the work was to make an estimate of the accuracy of locating a leak in a pressurized petroleum pipeline, by means of passive acoustic sensors mounted on the outside wall of the pipeline, as a function of leak rate and distance between acoustic sensors. While there are regulatory standards for detection of leaks in underground pressurized pipelines, there are no standards for leak location. For rapid remediation, it would be highly desirable if the leak could be located within 10% of the length of the pipeline in the case of a line longer than 30.5 m (100 ft), or within 3.0 m (10 ft) in the case of a line shorter than 30.5 m (100 ft). This limits the excavation to only a small fraction of the line. As will be shown below, theoretical estimates suggest that the accuracy of the proposed technique should be better than 25 cm. These theoretical estimates, however, assume that the leak signal is large compared to the noise.
