Abstract This study concerns itself with the determination of stack gas velocity and volumetric flow rate (EPA Method 2) as used with EPA Method 5 (Particulates). The determinations were calculated from data obtained in collaborative testing of Method 5 at three sites: a Portland cement plant, a coal-fired power plant and a municipal incinerator. These data were submitted to statistical analysis to obtain estimates of the precision that can be expected with the use of Method 2. The standard deviations for both velocity and flow rate are shown to be proportional to the mean value. The between-laboratory standard deviations are estimated as 5.0% of the mean and 5.6% of the mean for velocity and volumetric flow rate, respectively. The volumetric flow rate is used to calculate the emission rate for compliance testing. The precision of the emission rate is shown to be primarily a function of the precision of the pollutant test method used. The conclusion, then, is that the volumetric flow rate is used deterimination is sufficiently precise as it appears in Method 2.
