Abstract Standard Methods states, 'The biochemical oxygen demand (frequently referred to as B.O.D.) of sewage, sewage effluents, polluted waters, or industrial wastes is the oxygen (in parts per million) required during stabilization of the decomposable organic matter by aerobic bacterial action.' Most frequently, the 5 day, 20 degree B.O.D. is determined by the dilution method. This is the determination discussed in the report, and it is referred to as the B.O.D. test. (Author)
