Abstract |
The use of in-situ cosolvent flushing was evaluated at a field site located at Hill AFB, Utah. The experiment was conducted in a hydralically-isolated test cell (4.3 m x 3.4 m) constructed in a surficial sand-gravel-cobble aquifer, which was contaminated with a mixture of jet fuel and chlorinated solvents. A series of tests was conducted in the test cell to evaluate the effectiveness of cosolvent flushing using the following methods: (1) NAPL constituent concentrations measured by extraction and analysis of pre- and post-flushing soil core samples; (2) Cumulative mass of several target contaminants removed, as determined by analysis of the extraction well fluids; (3) Analysis of the data from pre- and post-flushing inter-well partitioning tracers tests; and (4) Pre- and post-flushing analysis of groundwater samples for target contaminant concentrations. The results obtained by the various methods agree, and indicate that > 90% mass of several target contaminants and > 75% of the total NAPL mass present in the test cell was removed as a result of the cosolvent flushing. |
