Abstract Intermittent sand filtration of wastewater is not a new technology. Sand filters were often used by sewered communities around the turn of the century. However, as wastewater flows and land costs increased, they were replaced by mechanical treatment processes. Recently, as the need for low cost facilities in rural areas has grown, intermittent filters have received increased use again.
