Abstract |
The Tyson's Dump site is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, approximately 15 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The dump is an abandoned septic and chemical waste disposal site which operated from 1960-1968. Unlined lagoons were filled with wastes and covered, and new lagoons were created. Major contaminants found at the site were volatile organic compounds, primarily xylenes, toluenes, and 1,2,3-trichloropropane. In addition, chlorinated benzene compounds were also detected. The cost-effective remedial alternative selected for this site includes excavation and off-site disposal of contaminated soils and wastes; upgrading of the existing air-stripping facility to treat leachate, shallow ground water, and surface run-on; and excavation and off-site disposal of contaminated sediments within the tributary which receives effluent from the existing air-stripping facility. The estimated capital cost for the selected alternative is $5,718,000 and operation and maintenance costs for five years are estimated to be $351,000. |
