Abstract Solid waste systems in recreational areas must be designed for maximum use. Because of the periods of low usage that occur in recreational areas, the overall system cost on a basis of dollars per ton or per can is much higher than in other areas with constant use. The proper design of a solid waste system in a recreational area is, therefore, even more critical than in an urban area where continuous use tends to reduce the unit cost. The Office of Solid Waste Management Programs (OSWMP) is collecting new data suitable for design purposes in recreational areas. This report is an attempt to bring together additional data from recent studies, demonstrations, and research projects.
