Abstract The 90-acre Madison County Sanitary Landfill is an active landfill area located in Madison, Madison County, Florida. In 1970, the City of Madison began operating the Madison County Landfill as a sanitary landfill. From 1971 to 1980, domestic waste from the city and surrounding area as well as local industrial wastes were disposed of in the landfill. During that time, the ITT Thompson Industries (formerly a division of ITT Corporation) disposed of waste in the landfill, including 55-gallon drums filled with waste polishing/buffer compounds at the site, but the exact location of disposal is not known. The ROD addresses both the onsite and offsite contaminated ground water in an effort to minimize the migration of contamination from the landfill to the surrounding community, to restore the ground water to drinking water quality for the chemicals of concern, and to monitor ground water in a manner that will verify the effectiveness of the selected remedy. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and ground water are VOCs; other organics; and metals.
