Contents Notes Witness the suppression of one of the largest debris fires in recent US history. This saga details the efforts of the Mark-Nielson Unified Command in extinguishing this five acre surface and subterranean fire. The debris fire ignited on January 11, 2003. Twenty six days later the fire was doused by using 40 firefighters, 10 fire engines, two trucks, four excavators, two dozers, and specialized industrial fire fighting equipment. It took another seven months to remove and haul the 104,000 tons of debris. Fire and cleanup expenditures for this debris pile were over $6.5 million. Over 30 agencies and private contractors worked in tandem to close the "Gates of Hell."
