Abstract American and Canadian monitoring of the quality of the Niagara River has indicated a need to assess contamination entering the river through the groundwater system. The contamination probably emanates from point and nonpoint sources in the adjacent area, along the U.S. side of the Niagara River from Lake Erie to Lewiston, approximately 20 miles downstream, which contains a high density of chemical manufacturing facilities and waste-disposal sites. 164 of the 215 hazardous waste disposal sites in Erie and Niagara Counties, New York are within 3 miles of the Niagara River. In 1982, the USGS, in co-operation with the USEPA and the NYDEC made a preliminary hydrogeologic and chemical evaluation of 138 of these 164 toxic waste disposal sites. The purpose of the investigation was to identify sites that are possible sources of contamination to the ground-water system.
