Abstract The Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act (Section 402; Title X) required the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct a study of lead exposure associated with renovation and remodeling (R&R) activities (the R&R study). The study, conducted from 1993 to 1995, gathered information to be used to help determine which groups of people conducting R&R activities require training, certification, or educational materials. The study was designed to satisfy two objectives: (1) Determine the extent to which persons engaged in various types of R&R activities are exposed to lead; and (2) Determine the extent to which persons engaged in various types of R&R activities disturb lead and create a lead-based paint hazard on a regular or occasional basis to building occupants or other exposed individuals.
