Abstract This report announces the conclusions of the EPA evaluation of the 'Save-A-Mile' device under provisions of Section 511 of the Motor Vehicle Information and Cost Savings Act. The 'Save-A-Mile' consists of a piece of copper cloth and a flat piece of insulating material which is placed between the carburetor and intake manifold of a gasoline engine. The stated purpose is to increase the efficiency of the engine and decrease the amount of pollutants generated. Although the limited amount of test data submitted by applicant did suggest some improvement over an unmodified induction system, the results were not obtained in accordance with EPA requirements and the data did not adequately quantify the amount of any improvement. In general, EPA has found that devices of this type are not effective in reducing emissions or improving fuel economy.
