Abstract The Combe Fill North site is located in Mount Olive Township, NJ, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 206 and Interstate 80. The area surrounding the site is primarily wooded, with small residential areas, farms and light industry nearby. Approximately 10,000 people rely on ground water supplied from wells downgradient of the site. The site operated as a sanitary municipal landfill, accepting municipal, vegetative, and non-chemical industrial wastes, along with small amounts of dry sewage sludge. In 1979, public outrage at the disposal practices led to formation of a public action group which conducted ground water sampling. Ground water, soils, leachate, sediments and surface water were sampled. Low levels of volatile organics were found in soils and leachate, and hexachlorobenzene, phenol and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate were detected in low concentrations in ground water samples. The remedial action for the Combe Fill North site includes grading and compacting the 65-acre waste disposal area, capping the landfill, installation of a drainage system, installation of a methane ventilation system, fencing the entire site, and implementation of an appropriate monitoring program. Estimated capital cost for the remedy is $10,500,000 with annual O&M costs of $168,000.
