Abstract Many towns in the New England states are without a municipal water system. The water used in thousands of homes is being supplied by springs, dug wells or, most commonly today, by rock wells - holes drilled either in igneous or metamorphic (crystalline) rocks. This study was undertaken to determine whether or not it would be feasible to launch a project which would use the method of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate the yield of wells drilled in crystalline rocks. The assumptions disclosed by this study indicated that such a project would be of considerable benefit.
