Abstract The current monitoring procedures seem to select a geographically representative sample, with an almost complete disregard of the underlying water distribution network. However, the quality of water changes as it travels from the treatment plant to the consumer. Thus, the purpose of the paper is to distinguish between aspects of macrolocation and microlocation of sampling stations for not only compliance purposes but to more accurately characterize water quality. Macrolocation determines a general geographic area and microlocation determines the specific house or tap.
