Abstract The discharge of increasing volumes of sewage effluent from waste water treatment plants as a result of increasing population and urbanization has accentuated water pollution problems in the eastern United States. Such effluents are relatively rich in mineral nutrients. It is quite possible that poor land conditions as from strip mining could be ameliorated through the irrigation of such areas with sewage effluent and sludge which is slightly alkaline in pH (about 7.4) and which has a high fertilizer equivalent. The report finds this sewage use is feasible. It was done by planting seven species of tree seedings in spoil with and without sewage fertilizer. (Author)
Highlights Notes Studies feasibility of using municipal waste waters to reclaim and revegetate barren bituminous strip mined spoil banks.
