Abstract The Albemarle-Pamlico (A/P) estuarine system is one of 17 estuaries identified nationwide under EPA's National Estuary Program. The purpose of the study was to estimate annual average nutrient loadings to surface waters in the A/P Study Area. Runoff from various land cover categories, direct input of atmospheric nutrients to surface waters, and point sources were considered. Nutrient sources to groundwater and transport from groundwater to surface waters were not considered. Pollutant loading factors ('export coefficients') were multiplied by the area in various land cover categories to estimate runoff inputs and atmospheric inputs. Output from EPA's Regional Atmospheric Deposition Model (RADM) was also used to estimate atmospheric nitrogen inputs. Nitrogen sources in order of decreasing magnitude are runoff, atmospheric inputs, upstream reservoirs, and point sources.
