Abstract Reverse osmosis treatment of plating bath rinsewaters has been examined. Emphasis has been placed on closed-loop operation with recycle of purified water for rinsing, and return of plating chemical concentrate to the bath. Three commercially available membrane configurations have been evaluated experimentally; tubular (cellulose acetate membrane), spiral-wound (cellulose acetate membrane), and hollow-fiber (polyamide membrane). Tests were conducted with nine different rinsewaters prepared by dilution of actual plating baths. Advantages and limitations of the reverse osmosis process and specific membranes and configurations are discussed. Systems tested include nickel sulfamate, Watts type nickel, copper pyrophosphate, zinc chloride, copper cyanide, zinc cyanide, cadmium cyanide, nickel fluoborate and chromic acid.
