Abstract An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the performance of several advanced wastewater treatment plants having biological, physical chemical, or soils treatment systems for removing or introducing mutagenic substances. Samples were taken before and after treatment and sometimes at intermediate points. Both concentrated and unconcentrated wastewaters were used. Three different concentration methods were utilized and compared. Salmonella typhimurium, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and mammalian cells were used in the test systems. Mutagenic activity was found to pass through most treatment plants and sometimes increased during treatment. Wastewater with no industrial wastes and strictly of domestic origin did not contain mutagenic properties.
