Abstract The report discusses and evaluates five alternatives (techniques) for ocean disposal of soils, containing very low levels of naturally occurring radionuclides, from the Department of Energy's (DOE) Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). These five techniques include: (1) disposal of unsolidified wastes in a closed barge; (2) disposal of unsolidified wastes in closed containers; (3) disposal of solidified wastes in a closed barge; (4) disposal of solidified wastes in closed containers; and, (5) disposal of solidified wastes without containerization. Each technique is evaluated with respect to how it conforms to eleven waste package performance criteria for ocean disposal of LLW.
