Abstract This report summarizes the results of a field demonstration conducted under the SITE program. The technology that was demonstrated was a metal-enhanced dechlorination process developed by EnviroMetal Technologies, Inc. to treat groundwater contaminated with chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The technology employs an electrochemical process that involves the oxidation of a reactive, granular iron medium to induce reductive dechlorination of chlorinated VOCs. The SITE Program evaluated an in-situ application of the technology during a six month demonstration at a site in central New York in 1995: The technology was constructed as a subsurface granular iron wall that fully penetrated the shallow sand and gravel aquifer that was contaminated with chlorinated VOCs. The groundwater flowed through the iron wall where the chlorinated VOCs then underwent dechlorination. The purpose of the demonstration was to obtain information on the performance and cost of the technology and assess its use at this and other uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. This report interprets the demonstration data and discusses the potential applicability of the technology.
