Abstract Under its Indoor Air Quality research program, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed several new air monitoring systems for assessment of nonoccupational exposures to chemicals found primarily in indoor air. Integrating and real-time (continuous) instruments for nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and a broad spectrum of volatile organic chemicals have been designed and field tested for indoor air and/or personal exposure monitoring. Samplers capable of collecting sufficient quantities of semivolatile organic chemicals for ultra-trace analysis and bioassay, which are also quiet and unobtrusive, have been developed and evaluated.
