Abstract The framework for the document is based on scientific issues identified by EPA's Research Committees composed of representatives of the Office of Research Development (ORD), Agency Program (regulatory) Offices and the Regions. One of the major issues is the development and evaluation of research on the impact and mitigation of acid deposition. Hazardous waste research is also a high priority. Other issues include biotechnology, reproductive toxicology and exposure assessment. A significant component of ORD's activities is devoted to the shorter-term resolution of technical issues identified by EPA's regulatory offices, including technical support and assistance. ORD also conducts oversight roles in quality assurance. In cooperation with Program Offices, ORD has been given the management responsibility for ensuring the consistency and technical competence of the risk assessment program, and managing new intra-Agency risk assessment workgroups for: carcinogenicity; mutagenicity; developmental toxicity; systemic effects; assessment of chemical mixtures; and exposure assessment.
