| Abstract |
EPA has discovered a number of uncontrolled hazardous waste sites in close proximity to abandoned underground mines. Further, several Resource Conservation and Recovery Act permit applications have been received for treatment, storage, or disposal facilities located in areas where abandoned underground mines are known to exist. The potential exists for subsidence under a hazardous waste facility to result in uncontrolled release of hazardous constituents to the environment. The investigation was approached in two phases. Phase I involved a literature review and data compilation to gather information on the subsidence phenomenon, available predictive models, and on the adverse effects that can result from mine-related subsidence and Phase II consisted of an evaluation of available equations and models used to predict subsidence and an assessment of the applicability of these models to predict subsidence problems at hazardous waste sites. |
