Abstract The chances of a newborn infant developing respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) rests in part on the formation of surfactant in his lungs. Since this substance escapes to the fetal sac, its concentration in the fluid forms an efficacious tool for measuring pulmonary maturity prior to birth. A simple, rapid, and inexpensive test was first devised by Clement to determine the presence of surfactant material in the amniotic fluid. The test depends on the ability of the surfactant to generate stable foam in the presence of ethanol.
