Abstract The report reviews the state of the art of concepts of surface combustion (that occurring near a solid surface) and assesses their applicability to large utility boilers and stationary gas turbines. Catalytic combustion looks promising for gas turbines. However, comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations are required for a meaningful assessment. Catalytic combustion is not considered feasible for existing steam boilers, but might apply to newly designed units. Sintered metal porous-plate combustors with imbedded cooling tubes (a non-catalytic concept), although technically feasible for steam boilers and possibly for low-pressure ratio gas turbines, has packaging problems and requires gaseous and distillate fuels.
