Abstract The report summarizes results of a coke oven charging emission control test program conducted at the P4 Battery of the Jones and Laughlin Pittsburgh Works between April 1971 and May 1974; actual field testing was between May and August 1973. Objectives of the test program were: to quantify atmospheric pollutants resulting from the coking process charging operation; to provide a comparative evaluation of a pollution abatement system (an improved design larry car versus an existing larry car); and to determine the feasibility of a compliance monitoring system concept based on optical measurement. All program objectives were accomplished: emission characteristics of the charging operation have been defined in terms of both gases and particulates released to the atmosphere. Emissions were also defined from leaking seals on the pushed side doors of the oven. Several pertinent conclusions were also developed relating to coke oven emissions measurement technology.
