Abstract A method is described for estimating the construction cost of building components designed to achieve a specified level of noise insulation. The method also determines the noise insulation value of each component of a multi-component wall such that the wall achieves a design level of noise insulation at the minimum construction cost. Curves of minimum construction cost as a function of design noise insulation are easily generated using the method. All calculations can be performed using a pocket calculator. The adjustment of construction cost estimates to account for inflation and geographic variation is discussed. Detailed examples illustrate the application of the method to design problems.
