Abstract The design, execution, and results of an interlaboratory study of Method 6010, 'Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy,' are described. The study examined the application of the method to the analysis of solid-waste materials for 23 elements. Part of the interlaboratory study included the study of Method 3050, 'Acid Digestion of Sediments, Sludges and Soils,' which is an integral part of Method 6010 when considering the analysis of certain solid wastes. The overall study was designed so that the variability of the two methods was separable. Method performance data, including precision and accuracy, are presented and discussed. A comparison of the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission and atomic absorption spectroscopic techniques is presented, as well as a comparison of results from two different types of inductively coupled plasma spectrometers. The limitations of the methods are described, and suggestions are given to improve the general application of Method 6010.
