Abstract The development of a Standard Reference Material for aqueous solutions of known concentration of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons is an extremely difficult procedure. This paper is one of a series discussing the development of a generator column technique at NBS for the production of Standard Reference Materials for PAH's in water. In addition to providing the basis for SRM development the aqueous solubility is a fundamental parameter in assessing the extent and rate of the dissolution of energy based polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and their persistence in the aquatic environment.
