Abstract |
The study evaluates the removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP), a wood preserving agent, from soils that have been contaminated over a period of time. Previously, equal proportions of ethanol and water were found to have the highest PCP removal efficiencies for above ground batch extractions at various soil:solvent ratios. In addition, the 50% and 75% ethanol solutions achieved higher removal efficiencies at low solvent throughputs in in-situ soil flushing experiments. In batch extraction tests, the 50% ethanol solution obtained higher PCP removal efficiencies for all soil fractions than the DI water and 100% ethanol solution. The PCP removal efficiency for in-situ above ground soil washing experiments was consistently higher for the 100x140 U.S. mesh soil, regardless of the aging period. In addition, for both in-situ flushing and above ground tests, a lower PCP removal efficiency was obtained for the 20x40 U.S. mesh soil conditioned at 60 C than that for the same soil fraction aged at room temperature.
