Abstract This guidance provides a survey of alternatives for continuous in-situ measurements of suspended particles, their chemical components, and their gaseous precursors. Recent and anticipated advances in measurement technology provide reliable and practical instruments for particle quantification over averaging times ranging from minutes to hours. These devices provide instantaneous, telemetered results and can used limited manpower more efficiently than manual, filter based methods. Commonly used continuous particle particle monitors measure inertial mass, mobility, light absorption and light scattering properites of fine particles.
