Abstract This report shows that hand placering for gold is a vanishing frontier enterprise from which it is now next to impossible to extract a living. Soon after the depression set in thousands of unemployed with their families attempted small-scale placer mining as a source of livelihood. "^ During the early years of the rush to the creeks the number of would-be miners failing to find gold was 20 times greater than the number of miners who had been successful in recovering an amount sufficient for even one sale.
