Abstract Significant portions of California mixed conifer forests are exposed to and influenced by the large extent of foliar injury. Foliar ozone injury to Jeffrey and ponderosa pine is apparent as far north as Tahoe National Forest and as far south as the San Bernardino mountains east of Los Angeles. Spatial patterns of ozone foliar injury appear to be correlated with spatial patterns of ozone concentration. Decreased ozone injury in the San Bernardinos over the last decade corresponds with decline ozone concentrations over the same time period. Visible injury is not a consistent indicator of changes in growth rate.
