| Abstract |
The research was designed to ascertain how public attitudes relate to water resources planning and management. A major Southeast urban area served as the initial data source for preliminary problem-oriented information from people. Sampling design and implementation was accomplished on a range of topics. Substudies empirically tested the telephone interview as a viable method for gathering qualitative data about the environment and other citizen-perceived urban problems and provided citizens data of theoretical and methodological significance relating to perceived source credibility. Trustworthiness of officials and agencies by the public was found to be a major variable in the communication process. Ratings on 51 issues obtained in telephone interviews bearing on public perception of environmental priorities were analyzed in search of the underlying importance of environmental concern. Salient issues were water and air pollution control, crime control, and drug control. Research findings contribute to the understanding of citizen concern for national and environmental issues. |
