Abstract Aerometric data were collected during 16 months in the vicinity of the coal-fired Clinch River Power Plant, located in the complex terrain of southwestern Virginia. Statistical analyses of SO2, NO, and NO sub x concentrations at eight fixed monitoring sites revealed significant diurnal and seasonal variations. Cross-section pollutant and meteorological measurements made from a helicopter were analyzed to show the dimensions of the plume. Plume heights calculated from wind and temperature profiles and plume widths calculated from the standard deviation of wind direction produced improvements over standard estimates. The influence of terrain features on the shape and path of the plume is clearly shown when assessing the helicopter data and selected case studies of ground monitoring data. Parameters for a Gaussian plume model were modified in a stepwise manner by using site specific meteorological data. The data obtained for the Clinch River site should be useful in further diagnosis and model testing of plume behavior in complex terrain.
