Abstract A five-stage, screen-type diffusion classifier was designed and built to make in-situ measurement of submicron aerosols at temperatures and pressures encountered in industrial-type exhaust stacks. Laboratory calibration proceeded satisfactorily and held strong promise of successful field demonstration. However, major problems were encountered in test procedures during both field tests (at the Jacksonville Florida Electric Authority (J.E.A.)) Southside generating Station, Unit 4 (oil-fired boiler) and the Naval Air Rework Facility, Jacksonville, Jet Engine test Cell 11 (J-52 engines). Conditioning of the glass fiber filters to sulfur oxides was not done at the Southside Power Plant - this appears to have been the major problem there. Temperatures of the exhaust stack exceeded 200 C at the Jet Engine Test Cell - consequent weight loss due to grease vaporization appears to have been the problem there. (Author)
