Abstract |
The goal of model evaluation within the framework for applications is to determine an air quality model (AQM's) degree of acceptability and usefulness for a specified application or task. That goal is met by satisfying three objectives: indicate the validity of the model's scientific formulations; evaluate the realism of the model's simulations; and characterize the credibility of the model's realism relative to its intended application. Satisfying these objectives, however, presents two fundamental problems for providing a meaningful interpretation of model behavior to guide decision-making: how to tell whether the model is producing seemingly appropriate results from incorrect formulations or input data; i.e., how model performance can appear right for the wrong reasons; and how to establish the model's acceptability when the evaluation tests appear inadequate for making a determination of acceptability. |
