Abstract That infectious agents are emitted into the atmosphere during the aeration phase of sewage treatment is well established in the literature, but it is not well documented that the emissions of particles containing bacteria and viruses are hazardous to the health of persons residing near the plant site. This study was designed to determine whether or not the health of persons exposed to aerosols emitted by a sewage treatment plant is significantly different from persons living in lesser exposed areas around the plant site.
