Abstract The Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife is operating a lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) hatchery in the Jordan River Valley utilizing two systems of springs for its water supply. Until the spring of 1972 the hatchery had been discharging its wastes into the Jordan River without any formal treatment. During the winter of 1971 and 1972 two settling basins were built to remove 80-95% of settleable solids from the wastewater. In order to evaluate the ecological impacts of the hatchery wastes on the receiving stream, periphytic production rates and the oxygen balance were determined at locations above and below the outfalls during March through June 1971 and again in 1972.
