Abstract Soil and plant samples were collected at Bakersfield, California, and Lubbock, Texas, from fields where sewage had been used for crop irrigation. The fields at Bakersfield had been irrigated with raw sewage for about 10 years followed by irrigation with primary effluent for at least 35 years. The fields at Lubbock had been irrigated for 6, 19, or 38 years with treatment plant effluent. The results of the investigations at these locations show that crop production has been increased by the use of municipal effluents as opposed to use of fresh water and commercial fertilizers. There was no indication that crop quality or soil physical properties had been adversely affected by the long-term effluent irrigation practices.
