Abstract The Fairchild Semiconductor (Mt. View) site is one of three Superfund sites that are being remediated concurrently. The other two sites are Intel (Mountain View Plant) and Raytheon. The sites are located in the Middlefield/Ellis/Whisman (MEW) Study Area in Santa Clara County in the city of Mountain View, California. Land use in the area is primarily light industrial and commercial, with some residential areas. There are no natural surface drainage features within or surrounding the site; most of the runoff is intercepted by a storm drain system and discharged to an offsite creek. Various industrial activities were conducted in the vicinity of the site, including semiconductor manufacturing, metal finishing operations, parts cleaning, aircraft maintenance, and other activities requiring the use, storage, and handling of a variety of chemicals, particularly solvents. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the site are VOCs including TCE, TCA, PCE, toluene, and xylenes, and other organics including phenols.
