Abstract An evaluation of principal sources of ground-water contamination has been carried out in 11 northeast states, including all of New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. The findings have been used to determine priorities for research into ways to correct existing sources of contamination and to point out deficiencies in present control methods for protection against further degradation of ground-water quality. Principal sources of ground-water quality degradation caused by man's activities that are common to most parts of the region are septic tanks and cesspools, buried tanks and pipelines including sanitary and storm sewers, the application and storage of highway deicing salts, municipal and industrial landfills of solid waste, unlined surface impoundments, spills, and the uncontrolled discharge of pollutants on the land surface.
