| Abstract |
The report is designed to acquaint one with a broad overview of the urban air pollution problem. The problems of the City of St. Louis were discussed in some detail to serve as a typical example of this urban air pollution crisis. It was stressed that the urban poor are often subjected to higher pollutant concentrations as a result of living in the central city area. The health effects of the common pollutants (SOx, NOx, Ox, COx, HC and particulates) were briefly discussed as were the effects of some of these pollutants on buildings, homes, and automobiles. The costs of air pollution in terms of damage to health and property was compared to the cost of making the necessary emission reductions through burning cleaner fuel, installing emission control equipment on stationary and mobile sources, and improved transportation. Federal activities in urban areas were discussed including the importance of effective transportation and land use planning. A variety of measures available for transportation and land use control were mentioned. |
