Abstract The report gives results of a study of the fate of selected minor and trace elements of Montana lignite and Illinois No. 6 bituminous coals during development of the HYGAS process. Solid residue samples from various development stages were analyzed. The data indicate that certain volatile trace elements are removed from the coal during gasification. Removed from the solids during processing were such elements as antimony, arsenic, bismuth, cadmium, chlorine, fluorine, mercury, lead, selenium, and tellurium. It is estimated that, in a full scale operation, these will appear in the quench water system.
