Abstract Only recently have fixed-film biological processes been intensively studied and applied to water pollution control. Because of certain inherent advantages of fixed-film over suspended growth biological treatment processes, this interest continues at a high level. The conference reported here is the second in a series intended to provide a forum for understanding and applying fixed-film biological treatment processes. The 17 technical sessions included 90 papers on: microbiology of biofilm; biofilm growth characteristics; selecting and arranging fixed-film media for anaerobic treatment systems; a special investigation of these systems; effect of packed-bed media configuration on trickling filter applications; reaction kinetics and process modelings; nutrient removal using these systems; the Columbus, IN, project; aerated fixed-film waste treatment systems; innovative applications of fixed-film bioreactors; treating industrial wastewaters using fixed-film reactors; nitrification; integrated treatment systems; and designing, operating, and maintaining an RBC. The conference also included a research needs workshop and a field trip to a 40-mgd RBC plant in Alexandria, VA.
