Abstract Resonance enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectrometry (CARS) has been demonstrated as a specific identification system for liquid chromatography for water pollution identification. To achieve this, liquid chromatographic preconcentration and separation and computer control of the liquid chromatograph/ultraviolet-visible/CARS were undertaken. Observations useful in relating experimental variables in the preconcentration step to the recovery of a given species were made. A system consisting of a liquid chromatograph, a scanning ultraviolet-visible spectrometer and the CARS was automated using a minicomputer. Column selection, flow rate, and solvent composition were monitored and controlled. The ultraviolet-visible spectrometer was used at a fixed wavelength until a species was detected. The Raman spectra were then scanned under control of the computer with on-line signal averaging and data smoothing.
