Abstract This report is the final output of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency contract which was funded to review present engineering and water management practices to minimize the infiltration of precipitation through trench caps. The objective of this effort was to evaluate and compare the existing practices in use at sanitary landfills, hazardous waste disposal facilities, and experimental burial sites, and to apply these practices to the commercial low-level radioactive waste sites. The report is based on a review of the literature and general knowledge of the state-of-the-art in sanitary engineering developments. The report describes presently available techniques which may be applicable to current and future shallow land burial operations.
